Bend & Central Oregon: Where Outdoor Culture Meets World-Class Coffee

Central Oregon's roasters fuel ski runs, river floats, and trail rides with some of the region's most interesting coffee.

There's a running joke in Bend that the town has more breweries per capita than anywhere in Oregon. What's less talked about — but equally true — is that the same thing is happening with coffee.

Central Oregon has quietly become one of the PNW's most interesting coffee scenes. Not because anyone set out to make it a coffee destination, but because the people who move to Bend, Redmond, and Sisters tend to be the kind of people who care deeply about what they put in their bodies — and what they drink before a 6am skin track up Bachelor.

We mapped a dozen independent roasters across Central Oregon on Roast Local. Here's why they're worth your attention.

Bend: The Hub

Bend is where the density is. Within a few square miles of downtown, you'll find roasters who've been at it for decades alongside newcomers pushing the boundaries of what specialty coffee looks like in a mountain town.

Thump Backporch Coffee is the result of two Bend institutions merging in January 2026. Thump brought multiple locations, a loyal following, and blends designed for the kind of person who drinks three cups before noon. Backporch brought a lighter, more exploratory roasting style and a relaxed, unpretentious vibe where muddy trail shoes are welcome. Together, they're the roaster most locals name first — combining accessibility with quality across a broader range than either offered alone.

Lone Pine Coffee Roasters brings a more contemporary specialty approach. Clean, bright coffees. Careful sourcing. The kind of roaster where the barista can tell you which farm the beans came from and what altitude they were grown at.

Bohemian Roastery and Bend Roasting Company round out the downtown core — each with their own take on what Bend coffee should taste like.

Sisters and Beyond

Drive 20 minutes west of Bend and you hit Sisters — a town of 3,000 people that has no business having coffee this good.

Sisters Coffee Company has been roasting since 1989. That's not a typo — they were doing specialty coffee in a tiny Oregon mountain town before most of the country knew what a pour-over was. Their longevity isn't nostalgia; it's earned. They source well, roast consistently, and have the kind of deep community roots that only come with three decades of showing up.

The Sustainability Corner

Central Oregon also has a notable concentration of roasters focused on organic and ethical sourcing.

Strictly Organic Coffee Company does exactly what the name says — USDA Organic, Fair Trade certified, and uncompromising about it. They've been at it since 1999 in Bend.

Green Plow Coffee Roasters takes a similar approach, with an emphasis on direct trade relationships and small-lot sourcing.

The Outliers

A few Central Oregon roasters deserve attention for doing something genuinely different.

Still Vibrato Coffee is a small operation with a cult following — their approach to light roasts has won over people who thought they didn't like light roasts.

Smith Rock Coffee Roasters takes its name from Oregon's most famous climbing destination, and the aesthetic matches — rugged, direct, no pretense.

Watershed Coffee Roasters and Bellatazza Coffee round out the scene in the broader Bend-Redmond area, each adding depth to a coffee culture that keeps growing.

Why This Matters

Central Oregon isn't Portland. It's not trying to be. The coffee scene here is shaped by the lifestyle — early mornings, long days outside, a community that values independence and quality. The roasters reflect that. They're not chasing trends. They're making coffee that's good enough to justify a 6am alarm when it's 15 degrees outside and you're about to hike through two feet of snow.

That's a high bar. These roasters clear it.
