Tend Coffee is a Certified Organic only coffee roaster on Long Island, founded in 2011 by Susan and Daniel Kennedy. From a roastery and cafe in Shirley, New York they roast organic single origins and blends in small batches, sell at farmers markets across the East End, supply restaurants and cafes from the Hamptons to Manhattan, and ship nationwide.
Susan Kennedy has spent most of her life in coffee. Before Tend, Daniel Kennedy spent most of his in some of the most fabled restaurant kitchens of the Northeast. An espresso caramel he was working on became a frustration when he could not find a coffee that delivered the sweet roastiness he wanted, so he decided to roast his own. It turned out chefs cared how a coffee paired with their desserts, baristas wanted the right acidity in their lattes, and people brewing at home wanted a consistently great cup that was organic. In 2011 Tend Coffee was born. With a new baby and a toddler at home, Susan and Daniel signed a lease on a building on Long Island, spent all their money on roasting equipment and started roasting Certified Organic coffee. To look after and care for is the definition of tend, and they could not think of a better name. They roasted tiny batches, filled bags by hand, and sold at farmers markets and to local restaurants out of a little yellow hatchback. Today Tend runs two locations in Shirley, a roastery and a cafe, a full calendar of farmers markets, and one of the fastest growing Certified Organic roasteries in New York. Every decision still runs through three questions: is this right for our people and community, is this right for the coffee, is this right for our company. If the answer is not yes to all three, it is a hard no. Their Grass Puppy Blend gives 20 percent of every pound sold to a different animal rescue every three months, and has since 2019.

Cocoa and toasted nuts come to the forefront. Roasted to a medium level, shows best in drip, press and pour over.
