Gnosis Coffee Roasters, located in in central Pennsylvania, is run by founder Jed Epler, roasting small batches of specialty coffee on a Typhoon fluid bed air roaster rather than the usual drum. The lineup stays deliberately small: mostly single origins, a couple of blends, roasted fresh to order and shipped free over $40.
My specialty coffee journey began in 2010 when I was hired to launch and manage a brand new coffee house in central Pennsylvania. I was new to the specialty coffee world, so I had plenty to learn. Before then, I only drank cheap coffee and loaded it with cream and sugar to make it tolerable. I was completely clueless about the wonderful world of specialty coffee! For my training, I had the pleasure to attend a barista school in Portland, Oregon. Sparks flew during my very first sip of a delicious Ethiopian coffee. I was blown away by how smooth and flavorful this BLACK coffee tasted! After managing the coffee house for a few years, I headed west to California in 2012 for a year. After a short stint out west, I found my way back to Lewisburg, Pennsylvania where I grew up. Soon thereafter, I began working for a local coffee roasting company, which was where I learned how to roast and eventually became their head roaster. I really fell in love with the craft of roasting coffee, and had a great appreciation and understanding f or it because of working in two different parts of the coffee world: brewing & roasting. When I felt like it was time to move on in early 2022, I decided to found Gnosis Coffee Roasters to focus my aspirations on roasting and sharing my passion of specialty coffees with our local community and beyond! At Gnosis, our mission is to showcase the delicious natural flavors in the coffee bean by roasting them to accentuate their innate potential. To maintain this goal, we keep our offerings simple so we can maintain really fresh, high quality coffees. We focus mostly on single origins, but have a few blends also. We maintain a mix of our signature coffees along with some limited time offerings. We are uniquely roasting on a Typhoon fluid bed air roaster. Air roasting has been gaining in popularity lately, as opposed to the still-dominant drum roasting method. There is some debate, but many experts claim that air roasting provides a more even roast due to using 100% convection heat, rather than a mix of conduction and convection as in drum roasting. Flavors are typically brighter and more pronounced. We hope you enjoy our carefully curated and artfully roasted coffees! - Jed Epler :)
