Prestogeorge Coffee & Tea has been roasting in Pittsburgh since 1958 and has run out of its own building at 1719 Penn Avenue in the Strip District since 2004. Depending on the season they roast 500 to over 1,000 pounds of green coffee a day, in-store and often in front of customers, across origins, blends, flavored coffees and decafs, alongside the city's largest loose-leaf tea selection.
Prestogeorge was founded in 1958 by John "J.P." Prestogeorge (1926 to 2010) as the Olde Fashioned Coffee Shoppe in the Miracle Mile Shopping Center in Monroeville, selling gourmet goods from around the world including imported teas and freshly roasted coffee. In 1965 John and his wife Christine (1936 to 2020) opened a second store at Greengate Mall in Greensburg and ran it for over two decades. In 1981 their son Stan, fresh out of college and already a trained roaster, opened a storefront in the Strip District and built Prestogeorge Fine Foods into a hub for premium meats and cheeses, homemade pastas, imported teas and fresh-roasted coffee, much of it roasted in front of customers. After more than twenty years renting, Stan bought his own building across the street in 2004. The smaller space forced a choice, and he scaled back prepared foods to focus on roasting and tea, which is when the business was rebranded Prestogeorge Coffee & Tea. Stan still owns it, now alongside his son A.J., and a hundred-year-old Jabez Burns roaster is still part of the operation.
