York Coffee Roastery is a small batch roaster in York, South Carolina, run as a social enterprise by MaxAbilities of York County. It roasts on four Sonofresco fluid bed roasters at 132 Blackburn Street, and every purchase funds job training for adults with developmental disabilities, autism and head and spinal cord injuries. Blends and single origins are sold in 3oz, 16oz and 5lb bags, ground or whole bean, alongside a monthly coffee club and custom packaging for weddings, fundraisers and events.
York Coffee Roastery is part of the MaxAbilities family. MaxAbilities of York County, formerly the York County Board of Disabilities and Special Needs, has spent more than 40 years supporting people in York County with intellectual disabilities, autism and head and spinal cord injuries. Job readiness training had long been part of that work, but for anyone who needed a job coach without a funding source to pay for one, the service simply was not available. In 2015 the desire for a great cup of coffee and the need for a sustainable, non Medicaid source of job coaching collided in a bold venture, and in 2017 the idea took working form with the purchase of 132 Blackburn Street and four Sonofresco fluid bed roasters. The roastery partners with a handful of other small roasters to buy beans from Ethiopia to the shade covered mountain slopes of Honduras, roasts fresh, packs into valve bags and ships straight out. Every purchase makes the job coaching sustainable rather than grant dependent, which is how a promise gets fulfilled.
