Villainous Grounds is a family run coffee roaster and comic shop on the square in downtown Perryville, Missouri. David and Mary Jo Bammel roast small batch to order on a machine they named Elksbane, in a 135 year old building that also holds an espresso bar and a bazaar of local artisans.
Villainous Grounds is a family affair. Mary Jo and David Bammel run the shop with their two children, Madeleine and Morgan. In the summer of 2021 they went looking for a roaster and found a gently used one for sale in Montana. Rather than pay to ship it, they drove out to collect it themselves, the first time off in six years. An elk came out of nowhere and totalled the van they were camping in, and they spent 36 hours stranded in Cody, Wyoming before finding another vehicle and finishing the trip. They named the roaster Elksbane, and the Ebony Elk Italian Roast after it. Mondays are roast day, everything is roasted to order, and the beans rest at least three days before they go out.
