The Northwest Territories' specialty coffee scene is concentrated entirely in Yellowknife, with 2 active independent roasters serving a city whose extreme isolation, sub-Arctic winters, and tight-knit community make local coffee culture especially load-bearing. Javaroma Gourmet Coffee & Tea has been roasting in Yellowknife since 1996 and is one of the oldest continuously-operating northern Canadian specialty operations. Barren Ground Coffee (founded 2017) added a newer-generation operator focused on small-batch sourcing. They import green coffee a long way and roast for a community that genuinely depends on them. The difference between commodity coffee and what they produce is felt every day by the people who live and work in the territory through the winter dark.
