About

Bean Theory is a small-batch specialty roaster in Poca, West Virginia, founded by Rachel Barnette in 2023. The lineup is almost entirely single origin - Ecuador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia and Uganda - alongside Fusion, the house blend, with each batch roasted to bring out what the bean already has rather than to hit a fixed house profile. Beyond the roastery, Bean Theory runs a mobile coffee catering bar for weddings and events, wholesale partnerships, and barista training and equipment service.

Our Story

Bean Theory began, in its own words, with a simple idea: that exceptional coffee could come from anywhere, and that a community in West Virginia deserved access to world-class beans roasted with care and intention. What started as a home-roasting hobby grew into a business in 2023, working out of Poca and sourcing single-origin beans from farms across Ecuador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Colombia and Uganda - each batch roasted to highlight its own character rather than a house style. Founder Rachel Barnette spent close to a decade in specialty coffee elsewhere before coming home to start it. She also founded the West Virginia Coffee Festival, now organised alongside five other roasters from around the state and drawing roughly 2,000 attendees in its second year - an attempt to build the connection between West Virginia roasters that she found missing when she arrived. Today Bean Theory serves its community through the online shop, the mobile coffee catering bar, wholesale partnerships, and barista training and equipment service.
