Portland's Best Indie Coffee Roasters You Haven't Tried Yet

Beyond the big names, Portland's coffee scene runs deep. Here are the roasters worth seeking out.

Portland has more independent coffee roasters per capita than almost anywhere in the country. Everyone knows Heart and Coava — but the city's real magic lives in the dozens of smaller operations roasting extraordinary coffee in converted warehouses, garage roasteries, and neighborhood shops across the city.

Here are some of Portland's standout indie roasters, from neighborhood staples to newcomers making waves.

The Neighborhood Anchors

Coava Coffee Roasters has become synonymous with Portland single-origin coffee. Their SE Grand Ave roastery is part cathedral, part laboratory — soaring ceilings and a visible Probat roaster turning out some of the cleanest, most expressive light roasts in the city. Their rotating seasonal single origins are consistently worth the trip.

Proud Mary brought Melbourne's specialty coffee ethos to Portland's Alberta Arts District. The omakase-style tasting flights and multi-brew service aren't just a gimmick — they're a window into just how different the same coffee can taste depending on how it's prepared.

Water Avenue Coffee operates out of a cavernous roastery in the Central Eastside Industrial District, supplying many of Portland's best restaurants and cafes. Their approach is approachable without sacrificing quality — a perfect gateway for people who think they don't like light roasts.

The Craft Specialists

Push x Pull in the Buckman neighborhood focuses almost exclusively on light-roasted, fruit-forward naturals and honeys. If you like your coffee to taste like a sip of something unexpected — stone fruit, tropical flowers, wine — this is your spot.

Marigold Coffee is women-owned and community-driven, with a rotating roster of single origins and their beloved Squirrel Rhapsody blend. They've built direct relationships with small farms and cooperatives, and it shows in the consistency and character of every bag.

Case Study Coffee has been a quiet force since 2006, with their Burnside Blend (spiced cocoa, plum, pecan pie) and Deviation Blend earning devoted followings among locals who've been drinking their coffee for nearly two decades.

The Under-the-Radar Gems

Roseline Coffee keeps things simple: a focused menu, a small selection of beautifully roasted beans, and a calm neighborhood cafe. Their blends lean toward honey, stone fruit, and almond — the kind of coffee that makes you slow down.

Courier Coffee Roasters is as Portland as it gets — a tiny space, a bicycle delivery service, and coffee roasted with obsessive attention. Their seasonal single origins are always worth asking about.

Upper Left Roasters in Southeast gives priority to green coffees not used by other Portland roasters, meaning you'll find things here you genuinely can't get anywhere else in the city. Based in Ladd's Addition, they've built a devoted neighborhood following.

The Bold Ones

Deadstock Coffee brings sneaker culture and hip-hop to coffee with a vibe unlike any other roastery in town. Founded by former Nike designer Ian Williams, Deadstock recently moved from its original Old Town location to The Hoxton Hotel in 2026 and also operates in Beaverton. Don't let the branding fool you — the coffee is serious.

Nossa Familia Coffee has deep roots in Brazilian coffee farming — the family has been growing coffee for five generations. Their Portland roastery bridges that heritage with Pacific Northwest craft, producing some of the smoothest, most balanced coffees in the city.
