Milwaukee anchors Wisconsin's eastern specialty coffee scene. Colectivo Coffee, founded as Alterra in 1993 and rebranded after the original Alterra brand was acquired, is one of the larger indie roasters in the upper Midwest, with multiple cafes across Milwaukee and Chicago plus a wholesale program reaching nationally. Canary Coffee Bar, Discourse Coffee Workshop, Hawthorne Coffee Roasters, Milwaukee Coffee Co., Neighborly Coffee Roasters, Rescued Roasters, Stone Creek Coffee, Sugar Leaf, Valentine Coffee Co., and Vennture Brew Co. round out the city's 11 active independent roasters. The Milwaukee scene has matured alongside the city's brewing-and-restaurant reinvention, with operators running their own cafes alongside wholesale supply lines. Cedarburg's Cedarburg Coffee Roastery and Sheboygan's Torke Family Coffee Roasters extend the eastern Wisconsin reach.
Madison runs Wisconsin's other major specialty scene.
